Enjoying Life with My Dog
Day 12 : Standing on your own feet
Three days after her hospital day, I decided to let Rose take her first steps on the ground. I wanted her to walk on her own, but she was so scared that she couldn’t even move. She was like a statue, frozen in place. I picked her up again and we went for a 15-minute walk around my flat.
Oh, dear! After coming back home, I had a sudden realisation that puppies shouldn’t be walking by their foot until two weeks after their last vaccination day. You see, their immune system starts to weaken as they stop drinking milk from their mommies. Vaccinations are fantastic at preventing various diseases, but they really kick in after about two weeks. I had no idea about that! Can you believe it? I’m such silly sometimes!
Rose is getting stronger and stronger, and one day we decided to walk on the street together. Before that, I used to hold her in my arms while we walked.
Day 9 : Hospital Day
Hello there! I got my first dog, Rose, and she’s absolutely adorable! She needed three vaccinations, and I had to give her the last one. So, I took her to the vet, and this incredibly kind young man was there to assist me. One thing I wish I had done differently is that I walked too quickly with Rose in her carrier, and she unfortunately got sick and vomited! The vet was so understanding and friendly. As I told him that Rose was my first dog, he said, “Feel free to ask me anything you’re curious about.” And he reassured me that she was completely fine. I was over the moon with relief!
But here’s the funny part: after coming home, I realised I’d been feeding her way too much food. She’d always leave her food behind, and her poops were so soft that it was a real challenge to clean the loo! But once I started feeding her the right amount, everything became a breeze. Silly me, I should’ve known better! Sorry, Rose!
Anyway, our journey together is just beginning. It’s been only a week, and Rose is still trying to figure out how to come out of her cage and play with me. I’m determined to make sure we both feel comfortable and happy living together. Let’s see how things go!
Day 4
Hey there! So, finally I did something different today. I left my little furry friend all alone at home for the first time.
And guess what? She was a total angel! She stayed so well, ate her fill, and even got a good sleep. Whenever I checked on her through the pet camera, she was curled up in her bed, asleep. Well, she’s a baby, so catching some Z’s is her top priority, right?
After I got back home, I decided to take her outside to let her experience the world around her. I wanted her to learn all sorts of new sounds and see different people walking on the street. She didn’t bark a single time! Instead, she just trumbled, a little chilly from the cold weather. Of course, I wasn’t going to let her out in the wild, so I put her in a cosy sling bag and kept her safe and warm.
I can’t wait to take her outside with me again soon. I’m sure she’ll love exploring the great outdoors and making new friends. Fingers crossed!
Day 2
On the second day I had her home, I just let her do her thing. I wanted her to come to me a bit, so I opened the cage. She barked at me! She was scared of the open space outside the cage. So, I let her stay inside the cage all day.
She ate well and slept well. The only thing I was worried about was that she barked a lot. I wonder if the neighbours would mind. She’s a baby, so I hope they understand.
* Explanation of the photo --- She did her business perfectly on the toilet during the day, but at night, she was too sleepy to go to the loo at the right spot.
Day 1
She devoured everything I gave her! It was such a relief to see her so happy. She even barked at me to give her more food!
Soon after, she curled up and fell asleep under the blanket I put over her cage.
I just hope she’ll get used to her new home in no time!
Day 1
Hey there! So, I went to the pet shop, and I was thinking, “I’ll take her home!” But honestly, I wasn’t quite ready yet. I asked a staff member, “Can I keep her until I’m ready to take her home?” And she said, “Absolutely! You pay a deposit, and we’ll keep her for you up to two weeks.”
I paid the deposit right away, and she asked me if I wanted to hold her in my arms before I left. I said, “YES! Please!”
She was still so tiny! I said to her, “I’ll come back here and take you home.” Her eyes met mine quietly, and we made a promise there.
After I came back home, I started getting ready for my new furry friend. Here’s what I did:
✔︎ I bought a big cage (I call it ‘house’). I live on my own, so she’ll have to be on her own at home while I’m at work. I know some countries don’t let dogs be left alone at home for long periods, and I feel guilty, but who can live with dogs without working? Anyway, I wanted her to stay in the house comfortably, so I chose a big one with plenty of space.
✔︎ I bought floor cushions because I knew she had weak knees. I needed to cover the hard wooden floor in floor cushions. I bought about 100 of them! Now, the floor never be slippery.
✔︎I got a pet camera so I could keep an eye on her even when I’m at work.
✔︎ I bought a couple of toys.
✔︎ I bought an automatic feeder. I chose one with an ice pack underneath the feed pocket, so I could feed her wet food even while I was at work. At that time, she was 3 months old, so I gave her soggy dog food.
✔︎ I bought a dog carrier.
✔︎ I bought dog food. The pet shop had an option that included dog food (the same one she had been fed at the pet shop), powder milk, nutritious paste (I gave her before letting her go to bed. This prevented her from having low blood pressure at night), and tins of dog food (in case of being uneaten).
✔︎ I bought a bowl and water dispenser.
I chose the date to take her home. She welcomed her home on March 7, 2025! I’m so excited!
Day 1-1
On February 17th, she turned three months old. I saw her still at the pet shop, and guess what? She was in a different glass case with a “on sale” sign! It made me feel sad, but it also made me think about taking her home.
A friendly staff member asked me if I wanted to hold her. I hesitated for a moment, saying, “Yes, but I’ve never held a dog in my arm before…”
She reassured me, saying, “Don’t worry. She’s very calm and I’ll help you out.”
The 3-month-old Yorkshire Terrier was tiny! She was lighter than I had expected, and she was so warm.
I told the staff that I was considering taking her home, but I wasn’t ready yet. She mentioned that she was on sale, so she could be on contract with someone anytime.
I thought about it for a few days and finally decided to contact the shop. “Well, I’ll take her home,” I said. “What should I do?”
Day 0-4
I checked out a few pet shops and websites looking for my future furry family member, and finally, I found her. She was a 2-month-old Yorkshire Terrier, but I was a bit hesitant at first. She was so tiny! I visited the pet shop a couple of times just to see if she was still there. Yorkshire is a district in England, and since I lived in the UK for 5 years, it felt like fate. Plus, she was born in the same prefecture as me. That’s when I seriously started thinking about bringing her home.
Before deciding to welcome her into my family, I did plenty of research on Yorkshire Terriers. Here’s what I learned before taking her home:
✔︎ They’re the second smallest breed in the world, usually weighing between 2-4kg.
✔︎ Historically, they were bred in England to hunt rats.
✔︎ They can be quite cautious and tend to bark a lot.
✔︎ They often have weak knees, so you need to be careful about the type of flooring to keep them safe.
